I would like to put forth the concept that the Sierra Nevada, and particularly areas like the Summit, which are readily accessible by major highways, act as a very large and precious backyard for all of the citizens of California. Readers who follow Tom Stienstra in the San Francisco Chronicle, and his excellent books, know what a wealth of hiking and lakes are within an hour of the Summit and Serene Lakes. A treasure for all, not just for those of us fortunate enough to live full or part time up here!
I fear, that under the guise of developing a supposedly environmentally friendly community, Misters Foster and Syme will destroy this precious area, and reduce access for those who don't have the money to pony up for condos, time shares, and hotels. Their proposal to build some sort of nature interpretive center (rocks displayed in cases because the real ones were dynamited to make new artificial lakes) strikes me as a cynical sop thrown to those opposed to exploitation of the rare beauty of the Summit.
So, when you hear the term "NIMBY", don't regard it as a perjorative. Rather, be proud of the fact you are willing to act as a trustee for all Californians' backyard, and be resolute in your defense of what you value in this priceless High Sierra.
